Structured reflection · preventative · private

Write the thought down.Watch the pattern.Live the version you deserve.

It reflects your own thinking patterns back to you.

Take a quick test to see if you have impostor thoughts
Do you have thoughts like:
One day they'll find out I don't really know what I'm doing.
I can't take the credit. It was the team, not me.
I didn't earn this. I just got lucky.
Everyone else seems to find this easy, so why don't I?
If I slow down for a moment, it all falls apart.
One mistake and they'll see who I really am.
I'm only here because someone helped me get in.
They'll realize I'm not as smart as they think.
I have to keep pushing or everyone will notice I'm falling behind.

How it works

The journey

See the pattern named. Test it against the evidence. Write the version you'd stand behind.

Write down the thought

One situation, your own words. No mood ratings.

Take the self reflection test

Six minutes, private, and you see your own pattern at the end.

Start the test

Why not journalling, another wellbeing app, or a chatbot?

Why not journalling?

Because a blank page lets you write the same worry again, only longer. Here you get a clear structure: write the thought, see what kind of thinking it is, check it against what really happened, then write a fairer version.

Why not another wellbeing app?

Because streaks, breathing timers and mood faces are made for everybody, so they fit nobody. They never look at the actual sentence in your head. On Story starts with your own words and works on that.

Why not a chatbot?

Because a chatbot answers with advice, and you already have plenty of advice. What helps is seeing your own thinking laid out so you can judge it yourself. On Story asks the questions, you write the answers, and the conclusion stays yours.

Privacy

You can't write honestly somewhere you don't trust.

  • Your entries are yours, never sold, never used to train models.
  • We collect only what the app needs to run, nothing "just in case."
  • Delete your account and the writing goes with it: one request, no dark patterns to keep you in the loop.

Self-check

The impostor syndrome self-check

Twenty questions, around five minutes. Your answers are scored and returned to you, and nothing is stored or linked to you.

Question 1 of 22

There are no right or wrong answers. Choose the option that best describes how often each statement is true for you lately.

I feel like I'm pretending to be good at things rather than actually being good at them.
How this is scored, and why you can trust the numbers

The score is produced by a fixed, published formula that runs on our server. There is no AI, no guessing and no hidden weighting. The same answers always produce exactly the same result, and every step below is open to inspection.

  • Where the questions come from

The 20 core items follow the structure of established impostor phenomenon research, principally the Clance Impostor Phenomenon Scale and the Harvey and Leary lines of work, together with the five factors that appear consistently in factor analytic studies of that literature: fraudulence, luck attribution, discounting success, unfavourable comparison, and fear of evaluation. The wording is our own adaptation, so this is not the licensed Clance scale itself and the two are not interchangeable.

  • How your answers become a number

Every item is answered on a five point frequency scale, from 1 (never) to 5 (almost always). Four items belong to each of the five areas, so each area scores from 4 to 20. The five areas are added together for a total from 20 to 100. Nothing is reweighted, reversed or adjusted after the fact.

  • How the bands are set

Totals of 20 to 40 read as Low, 41 to 60 as Moderate, 61 to 80 as High, and 81 to 100 as Intense. These cut points follow the quartile banding used in the published impostor phenomenon literature. An area is highlighted for you only when it scores 12 or more, which is the midpoint of its range. Bands describe intensity of reported experience, not severity of a condition.

  • The two AI questions, and where they come from

The last two questions are a research extension on impostor thoughts in the context of working with AI, developed from the academic research of On Story's founder, Wafaa Albadry, on professional confidence and human expertise alongside AI systems. They are optional, they are scored separately from 2 to 10, and they never touch your main result. This extension is newer than the core items and is still being validated, so we report it as an exploratory indicator rather than a settled measure.

  • What we do with the numbers

Your result is calculated, returned to your screen and then discarded. Nothing is stored unless you choose to share your scores, and in that case only the numbers are kept, with no answers, name, email or IP address attached.

  • What this is not

This is a self report reflection tool, not a diagnostic instrument. It measures what you reported today, it can read differently on another day, and it cannot tell you whether you have a clinical condition. Only a qualified professional can do that.

Scoring model: 20 item, five factor, sum score, plus a separate 2 item AI extension. Version iss-20-v2.

Your answers stay in your browser. They are sent to be scored, shown to you, and then discarded. Nothing is stored unless you tick the sharing box on your result, and even then only the scores are stored.

This self-check is for personal reflection and education. It is preventative, not clinical, and it does not diagnose anything.

Two paths, clear rules. Pick the one that describes you.

What is a wellbeing practitioner on On Story?

A wellbeing practitioner is someone who works professionally with people's mental health or wellbeing. This includes licensed mental health practitioners, certified coaches and accredited wellbeing practitioners. We verify credentials before opening a practitioner account.

Can I sign up as a community leader?

Not as a practitioner. Community leaders are welcome to join the individual waiting list, but the practitioner track is reserved for people with recognised professional standing. If you are not a licensed practitioner, certified coach or accredited wellbeing practitioner, please sign up as an individual user.

What if I am not sure which track is right for me?

If you are signing up for yourself, choose the individual waiting list. If you want to recommend On Story to clients or use it professionally between sessions, choose the wellbeing practitioner track.

Who can sign up as a practitioner

Practitioner accounts are for people who hold a recognised professional standing, because we hand over client promo codes and practitioner material.

  • Licensed or registered mental health practitioners, such as psychologists, psychotherapists and counsellors.
  • Coaches certified by a recognised body, for example ICF, EMCC or an equivalent national accreditation.
  • Wellbeing practitioners accredited by a professional association in their country of practice.

We ask for your registration, licence or accreditation details before a practitioner account is opened. If you do not qualify yet, sign up as an individual user instead, nothing is lost.

Mental fitness, not clinical care

On Story is a mental fitness and well-being app. It helps you reflect on your own thoughts and learned behavior, and supports you in changing them through your own agency. It is educational and preventative, not clinical.
